‘Pouākai, haere mai!’ she roared, pulling a mighty pūkana.

There was a flash of light and Pipi changed into a pouākai, a giant eagle.

‘Argh!’ Kimiora cried, falling back.

Pou had been expecting the kuia to react. He managed to catch her before she hit the ground.

The other kaumātua were also startled by the spark and the transformation of Pipi turning into an eagle. They gaped at the bird of prey as it flapped its powerful wings, manoeuvred clear of the trees and rose into the air.

‘See!’ Rōpata cheered, pointing at the creature. ‘I told you I saw a big bird over the mountain earlier! None of you believed me! Told me it was blimmin pigeon! Ha ha, who was right?’

‘That’s not possible!’ Rui gasped. ‘They’re extinct. The pouākai died out hundreds of years ago.’

‘Well, whaea,’ Nana smiled. ‘I’m not sure what that pouākai is in front of your eyes then.’

Pou laughed.

He admired his whanaunga hovering in the sky above.

‘Your turn, boy,’ said Nana.

He looked to find the old people all standing together watching him. He flicked his brow and grinned.

‘Uh, kia ora,’ Pou said.

Standing tall, he flexed his back and took a deep breath.

Pou slapped his thighs and stomped his foot.

‘Taniwha, kia kaha!’ he roared, pulling a mighty pūkana.

There was a flash of light and Pou turned into a taniwha.

The second surprise was too much for Kimiora.

‘Aiii, I need to sit down,’ she said, holding onto Nana.

The other kaumātua held onto one another to stop themselves from falling over.

Pou te Taniwha stomped around in front of the group, showing off his power and strength with a powerful haka.

Rōpata was the only one amongst the group of kaumātua who didn’t seem to be all that surprised by the transformation of Pipi and Pou. He leaned on his tokotoko and looked at Nana.

‘So, no lawyers in your whānau then?’ he joked.
